This satellite contains a microwave radiometer (an SSM/I plus a pair of 10 GHz channels), a precipitation radar, a visible/infrared imaging radiometer (AVHRR near copy), a lighting sensor, and a broad-band long and short wave energy balance radiometer. We are involved in the algorithms for the radiometer as Radiometer Team Leader. A major part of our effort goes into developing and testing improved radiative transfer models and rainfall retrieval algorithms. We are also involved in the use of the precipitation radar to improve passive microwave algorithms, as well as the use of airborne radar data, such as that from KWAJEX, TOGA/COARE, and TCM-90, for this purpose. This activity is supported by NASA.
