Research Interests

I am interested in data assimilation. Now my research focuses on Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) assimilation of radar data. The EnKF has been shown being able to adequately track the true state and has become one of two leading candidates (the other is 4D-Var) to be employed in future operational data assimilation practice. And radar data have great potential in improving weather forecasts. Assimilation of radar data to provide better initial fields for short-range numerical weather forecasting or nowcasting has become a focal point of research.

At present, we have built a WRF-based EnKF system and successfully applied to WSR-88D and SMART clear air radar radial velocity assimilation for regional air quality studies. Further more, we plan to apply this system to hurricane track forecasting research.
