Monthly Review

The transition to 2009 brought similar weather conditions that 2008 left behind. Temperatures were much above average the majority of the month, and in fact, daily high temperatures averaged 5.4°F above their normals. The mercury reached an incredible 83°F on the 3rd, breaking the old record of 2006. Low temperatures, due to several cold fronts throughout the month, were slightly lower than average. But overall, January 2009 was an unusually warm month. Drought continued across the area, with less than three quarters of an inch of rain accumulating for the month. Though several fronts dropped temperatures, they lacked any substantial moisture and left very little precipitation in their path to quench the area drought. Apart from about two hundredths of an inch of rain recorded on the 27th-28th, College Station has not seen a substantial amount of precipitation since the 5th-6th, when all but 0.05" of January's monthly precipitation of 0.70" fell. La Nina conditions have developed in the Pacific Ocean, which entails above average temperatures and below average precipitation for the region.
