Volume 20 Number 10                                                                                            OCTOBER 2007

October 2007 was a warm and a very dry month for almost the entire state. A zonal wind pattern across the United States kept any significant cold fronts from entering the state the first half of the month. Average daily high temperatures were 5º to 6º F above normal at many of the first order stations. In fact, 10 stations observed average high temperatures at least 4º F above normal, and three stations (Lubbock, Midland, and San Angelo) recorded average high temperatures at least 6º F above normal. Every first order station recorded above normal mean monthly temperatures.

Precipitation totals were mostly above normal across the entire state. Houston was the only station to record above average rain totals for the month. Parts of West Texas, the Panhandle, and the Hill County were particularly dry. El Paso only received .08” of rain for the month, and Midland only received .16” of rain. 10 of the first order stations recorded rainfall totals of less than 1 inch, and only a few of the stations received close to normal rainfall totals.

The first significant cold front of the season moved through the state in late October bringing an end to the above average temperatures. Several stations saw low temperatures drop into the 30’s. Temperatures gradually moderated across the state as October came to a close.
