Monthly Review

June was a very wet month for College Station as precipitation for the month reached nearly three inches above normal. This brought the total for 1997 to above 24 inches -- nearly 5 inches above normal. It is easy to see how things can change from one year to the next when comparing this year with 1996. At this time last year, College Station had not even reached 10 inches of rainfall as the area was experiencing serious drought conditions. The 10th brought us our most significant rain event of the month as very heavy showers and thunderstorms occurred throughout the entire morning.

Temperatures were again cooler than normal this month. A departure of -1.4F in the mean monthly temperature, although small, is quite significant for late spring and summer months. Temperatures finally passed the 90F mark for the first time in 1997 on the 14th when 91F was observed. This was the third latest date in history for the first yearly exceedence of 90F. Although seriously threatened this year, the all-time record is still June 18th, set back in 1979.
