Monthly Review
Positive anomalies of temperature in the Brazos Valley greeted the new year. With a mean
monthly temperature of 54.6°F, January was 6.1°F above normal. The mean daily temperature
rose above its daily normal temperature on 22 days throughout the month. The daily positive
departures ranged from 1°F to 24°F. The 17th and 21st of January saw new high temperature
records set with temperature readings climbing to 79°F and 80°F respectively. Precipitation on
the other hand was 1.70 inches below normal for the month of January. This was the first month
since last July to experience less precipitation than what is normally expected.
Around three-quarters of the total precipitation that fell at Easterwood Field during January 1999
was actually observed from the 28th to the 30th. During this time a low pressure system in South
Texas tracked eastward across the state. The system triggered severe storms across the area while
also bringing heavy rain to some locations in Brazos County.
