Monthly Review
The mean daily temperatures were well above normal for the Bryan/College Station area during the
first week of December. Finally on the 6th and 7th, when a front passed over the region bringing
Easterwood Field a 2 day total of 2.02" of rain, the mean daily temperatures were brought back
down much closer to normal. From the 9th to the 11th a low pressure system was parked off the
southeast coast of Texas. This system brought overrunning precipitation to B/CS resulting in a 3
day total of 2.58". Temperatures cooled off a bit with negative departures from normal lasting
from the 8th to the 16th of December.
Easterwood Field saw very little rain for the second half of December. Only 0.20" of the monthly
precipitation total was recorded after the 15th. A frontal passage on the 22nd brought very cold
air in behind it dropping temperature readings significantly just in time for Christmas. For
instance, the high temperature on the 21st was 77°F, but was only 34°F on the 22nd. The lowest
temperature of the month was the minimum of 24°F on the 26th. This temperature also tied the
2nd lowest minimum temperature ever recorded on that date.
With the start of a new year, the total precipitation for 1998 at Easterwood Field equalled
45.32". Even with the extreme heat and drought of the summer, this value of 45.32" is still 6.24"
above the normal expected precipitation for a year at Easterwood Field.
