Configure Outlook Express for Ariel

Outlook Express:
1. Click on the Start menu and click on the Programs menu. Find the icon for Outlook Express and click on it.
2. A window similar to below will appear. Enter your name as you want it to appear on your outgoing mail. Click Next.

3. Now enter your e-mail address in the field. It should be similar to the format below to use with Ariel. Click Next.

4. Ariel is reffered to as a POP3 server because it "pops" the mail off of the server onto you computer. Be careful however, because if you configure Outlook on one computer and then try to configure it on another you will have to keep up with two different sets of messages on two computers. This is because the mail is actually downloaded to what ever computer checks for mail. I'm sure that is more than you really wanted to know but I figured it might be a bit useful anyway. For your incoming and outgoing mail server, both should read ariel.met.tamu.edu. If you have any questions about this refer to the window below.

5. Now you need to enter your account name. Your account name is going to be the part of your email address before the @ symbol. Enter your password in the next line. You can choose Remember Password so you don't have to enter it everytime you check your mail.

6. Congratulations! You have now configured Outlook Express to check your Ariel account for mail. Click Finish on the final screen and your mailbox window will open. There is still one more little configuration to though to help protect you from viruses. Outlook has the nice feature on the right of the screen called the Preview Pane that automatically downloads and opens your new mail when click on it in your mailbox. This feature is meant to be harmless but by automatically downloading and opening the mail when clicked, you can run the chance of infecting your computer with a virus. Now we are going to turn that Preview Pane off so that you only open the mail you know and trust. Click Tools in the menu bar and highlight Options in the menu. Now you need to click on the Read tab in the new window. Make sure the third box down does not have a check in it like below. Once you have down this click OK and you are all done. Now you can check your mail a little more at ease.
