Week 11: The Global Nitrogen Cycle, lecture
material (pdf-file, two extra slides)
Reading assigment: Chapter 12 of the textbook: The Global Cycles of Nitrogen and
Phosphorus
Notes:
- Domestic animals are the largest source of atmospheric ammonia,
which gets mostly deposited on land in the regions of large animal
facilities (Table 12.1) !
- Increased N-fixation via fossil fuel combustion (N2
--> NOx) has contributed much to air pollution (Table
12.2), still dwarfing the lightning source
- The global N2O budget (Table 12.3) as
evaluated/revised by the IPCC (2001) is here
- Confer to Figure 12.7 with regards to my comments on the feedback
between NPP and nitrogen fertilization ("saturation" occurs)
