ATMO 203:  STUDY GUIDE FOR TUTORIAL 15

Note:  This tutorial was written when the forecasting contest involved forecasting a precipitation category, ranging from 0 (no rain) to 5 (lots of rain).  As you know we now forecast an exact amount of rainfall, as well as the wind speed.

1)     Know the five steps in the forecasting process.

2)     Know how 1000-500 mb thickness relates to temperature (you could have figured this out after Tutorial 13).

3)     Know how wind speeds relate to the spacing of isobars on the map (you could have figured this out after Tutorial 14).

4)     List (and understand) all the forecasting techniques used in the tutorial.  Include techniques or hints for forecasting temperatures, front timing and precipitation.

        Some hints:

a.       How does downsloping affect precipitation?

b.      How do temperatures behave just ahead of a cold front?

c.       How can you determine the speed of a cold front?
